The dense woods and sparkling lakes of the forest give the area a near-wilderness character, but those who vacation here will find all the comforts of home. The numerous lakes are favorites for anglers searching for walleye, northern pike, bass, muskie and panfish. Sailing and boating are also popular. Dozens of family resorts and campgrounds are tucked into the forest, near the small communities of Cass Lake, Bena, Remer, and Hackensack, as well as the town of Walker.
There's a wide choice of recreation off the water as well. The new Paul Bunyan Trail is paved for biking, and has quickly become a favorite snowmobiling trail as well (list hiking/biking trails). In the winter, the woods and waters of the Brainerd Lakes Area draw snowmobilers, ice anglers, cross-country and downhill skiers. Kids will enjoy the amusement parks and water slides. Adults might want to try their luck at Grand Casino on the west shore of Mille Lacs.
